Great Southwestern Construction Company initially engaged JD Ford & Company to assess the fair market value of the Company and to evaluate the viability of a sale of the Company to a third party. The sole shareholder, nearing retirement, wished to reduce his risk and wanted to secure the future of the Company and provide opportunities for his employees. However, the marketability assessment stated that conditions were not right to sell the Company. The shareholder delayed the sale for three years, when conditions had improved. JD Ford & Company was then engaged to sell the Company. By taking advantage of market timing and adhering to the information provided by the marketability assessment, the shareholder sold his Company for nearly five times what the initial valuation stated, thus proving the importance of such assessment.
